Varifocal or Bifocal?

If you require a prescription for distance and reading in your cycling glasses, you have the choice between varifocal and bifocal lenses.

Varifocals give you the flexibility of long distance, middle distance and reading vision in a seamless multifocal lens. Perhaps the only disadvantage varifocals have for cyclists can be the presence of some distortion in the peripheral vision the edges of the lens. This is particularly noticeable when turning to look behind you.

Bifocals lenses do not suffer from any distortion at the edges. They give clear vision at the top of the lens with a small window at the bottom for reading/garmin etc. Bifocals are a much better choice for high prescriptions or for those who are new to lenses that have a distance and reading element.
